Is your label fit for purpose?

The average consumer will spend 4 seconds looking at your product, does your label say what it needs to say in those 4 seconds? Let’s look at the fundamentals of effective design, starting with form and function.

In this article we suggest a few things to consider about the form and function of a label like; where will it be used and how durable it needs to be. There are so many options when it comes to choosing the right label. Labels are on almost everything, from FMCG to luxury items, cosmetics, pet products, food, and chemicals, but no two are the same.

Do you need labels to seal a package or bag or are you applying it directly to the product? What environment will the labels be exposed to in the lifecycle of the product from manufacture to distribution, to display, and ultimately, the hands of the consumer? Will they be exposed to extreme temperatures or moisture? Do the labels need to be permanent or removable? These are good questions to answer when building a brief for a design team.

In summary, you will need to consider:

  • What is your budget?
  • What are the labels being applied to?
  • Is there a brand status to maintain?
  • Do you require the labels to be as sustainable as possible?
  • Will the labels be machine or hand applied?
  • Are there any manufacturing environments that need to be considered?
  • Will they be on display, are there any size limitations to this?
  • How much will they be handled?

Now we have covered some of the things to consider when figuring out the form and function of the labels, let’s look at some ‘out of the box’ solutions. Bear in mind, these are simply starting points, and the possibilities are endless. We can print bespoke solutions to meet your requirements and often what you require will not be an ‘off the shelf’ solution.
